Motion Sickness

What is

Motion Sickness

Motion sickness occurs when the eyes and inner ear send conflicting signals to the brain during movement, resulting in nausea, dizziness, cold sweats, vomiting, and fatigue during car, boat, airplane, or train travel. It is extremely common, not a sign of a serious condition, and can affect people of all ages, though it tends to be more frequent in children, women, and individuals with a history of migraines. Prevention is far more effective than treatment — prescription and OTC medications work best when taken 30–60 minutes before travel begins, not after symptoms have already started. Non-medication strategies that help include sitting in the front seat or over the wing of a plane, looking at the horizon, avoiding reading or screens during travel, staying hydrated, and eating a light meal beforehand. Most motion sickness medications cause significant drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery after taking them unless specifically confirmed safe by your provider. Seek care if you experience dizziness or nausea outside of travel situations, as persistent symptoms at rest may indicate a separate inner ear or vestibular condition rather than motion sickness.

How your visit works

You'll complete a short online assessment describing your symptoms and health history. A licensed medical provider reviews it — usually within the hour — and determines the safest, most appropriate treatment. If a prescription is appropriate, it's sent directly to your pharmacy.

When to seek in-person or emergency care instead

Seek care if dizziness or nausea occurs outside of travel situations. Motion-sickness medications may cause significant drowsiness, so do not drive or operate machinery unless your provider confirms it is safe.
