What is
Poison Ivy / Oak / Sumac
Poison ivy, oak, and sumac reactions are caused by urushiol, an oily resin found in these plants that triggers an allergic skin reaction on contact. Symptoms typically appear 12–72 hours after exposure and include intense itching, redness, swelling, and fluid-filled blisters. The rash does not spread from person to person or from touching the blisters — it appears to spread because different areas of skin react at different rates depending on how much urushiol contacted each area. Mild reactions respond well to cool compresses, calamine lotion, and OTC antihistamines, while moderate to severe reactions — especially those involving the face, eyes, or genitals — often require prescription oral or topical steroids. It is important to complete the full steroid course as prescribed, as stopping early frequently causes the rash to return. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop difficulty breathing, throat swelling, widespread rapidly spreading hives, or faintness, as these are signs of a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.
