Oral Thrush

What is

Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is a fungal infection of the mouth caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast, commonly triggered by antibiotic use, steroid inhaler use, dentures, or a weakened immune system. Symptoms include white creamy patches inside the mouth or throat, redness and soreness, difficulty swallowing, and a cottony feeling in the mouth. Treatment requires prescription antifungal medication — antibiotics will not treat thrush and can make it worse. Without treatment, the infection can spread to the esophagus or bloodstream, particularly in people with weakened immune systems. Red flags requiring immediate care include difficulty breathing, severe difficulty swallowing, inability to eat or drink, and rapidly spreading white patches into the throat.

Common symptoms

  • Creamy white patches on the tongue, cheeks, gums, or tonsils

  • Redness, burning, or difficulty eating or swallowing

  • Cracking at the corners of the mouth

  • Dry mouth or loss of taste

How your visit works

You'll complete a short online assessment describing your symptoms and health history. A licensed medical provider reviews it — usually within the hour — and determines the safest, most appropriate treatment. If a prescription is appropriate, it's sent directly to your pharmacy.

When to seek in-person or emergency care instead

Seek further evaluation if you have difficulty swallowing, throat involvement, infections that keep coming back, or an underlying condition like uncontrolled diabetes or HIV.
