Scabies

What is

Scabies

Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by a microscopic mite that burrows into the outer layer of skin, triggering an intense allergic reaction. Symptoms include severe itching especially at night, a pimple-like rash, and thin burrow tracks most commonly found between the fingers, on the wrists, in skin folds, and around the genitals. Treatment requires prescription scabicide medication applied to the entire
body, and all household members and close contacts must be treated simultaneously even without symptoms. Without treatment, scabies will not resolve and will continue to spread to others through skin-to-skin contact. Red flags requiring prompt in-person care include signs of secondary bacterial infection such as pus, spreading redness or fever, and crusted or thickened skin covering large body areas.

Common symptoms

  • Intense itching, often worse at night

  • Thin, gray or reddish burrow lines and small blisters

  • A rash commonly in the armpits, waistline, or between fingers and toes

  • Skin sores from scratching

How your visit works

You'll complete a short online assessment describing your symptoms and health history. A licensed medical provider reviews it — usually within the hour — and determines the safest, most appropriate treatment. If a prescription is appropriate, it's sent directly to your pharmacy.

When to seek in-person or emergency care instead

Seek further evaluation if you have thick, crusted skin lesions or a weakened immune system. Household members and close contacts should be treated at the same time, even without symptoms.
