What is
Sinus Infection
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus cavities, most often caused by a viral or bacterial infection following
a cold or upper respiratory illness. Symptoms include facial pressure or pain, nasal congestion, thick yellow
or green nasal discharge, headache, and fatigue. Viral sinusitis resolves on its own; bacterial sinusitis
requires antibiotic treatment, along with saline rinses, hydration, and decongestants if tolerated. Untreated
bacterial sinusitis can spread to nearby structures including the eyes, brain, or bone. Red flags requiring
immediate ER care include severe headache, vision changes, swelling around the eyes, stiff neck, and high
fever with confusion.
