Stye

What is

Stye

A stye (hordeolum) is a painful red bump on or inside the eyelid caused by a bacterial infection of an oil gland or hair follicle, most commonly due to Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Symptoms include a tender, swollen lump on the eyelid, redness, tearing, and sometimes visible pus at the tip of the bump. Warm compresses applied for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily, are the most effective first-line treatment and help the blocked gland open and drain naturally — do not squeeze or attempt to pop a stye. Prescription antibiotic eye drops or ointment may be recommended for more persistent or severe cases, and contact lenses and eye makeup should be avoided until the stye has fully resolved. Most styes improve within 7–10 days with consistent warm compress treatment. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, inability to open your eye, redness or swelling spreading beyond the eyelid, or fever, as these may indicate a serious orbital infection.
