Yeast Infection

What is

Yeast Infection

A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast in the vagina, often
triggered by antibiotic use, hormonal changes, or moisture and tight clothing. Symptoms include intense
vaginal itching and burning, thick white cottage cheese-like discharge without a strong odor, and redness or
soreness of the vulva. Treatment requires antifungal medication, either prescribed or over-the-counter —
antibiotics will not treat a yeast infection and can worsen it. Without treatment, symptoms will persist and
worsen, significantly affecting quality of life. Red flags requiring prompt care include high fever, severe pelvic
pain, symptoms that do not improve with treatment, and pregnancy.

Common symptoms

  • Vaginal itching, irritation, or swelling

  • Thick, white, cottage-cheese-like discharge

  • Burning during urination or pain during sex

  • Redness or soreness of the vulva

How your visit works

You'll complete a short online assessment describing your symptoms and health history. A licensed medical provider reviews it — usually within the hour — and determines the safest, most appropriate treatment. If a prescription is appropriate, it's sent directly to your pharmacy.

When to seek in-person or emergency care instead

Symptoms can overlap with bacterial vaginosis or a UTI, so an accurate diagnosis matters — especially if this is your first suspected yeast infection or it keeps coming back. Your provider will help confirm what's going on.
